5. Eresma Valley

Atractions: plaza San Lorenzo, San Vicente El Real, Santa Cruz La Real, Santo Domingo, Santa María del Parral, Real Ingenio, iglesia Veracruz, San Juan de la Cruz, Virgen de la Fuencisla.

The Eresma River as it passes surrounding the city offers the visitor one of the most surprising natural landscapes in the city, with the Alcazar and the walled city as a backdrop.

The square in the old suburb of San Lorenzo is an emblematic example of medieval architecture where the Romanesque church of the same name is located.

The spiritual sensation of this valley is provided by many examples of religious architecture we can find, like San Vicente El Real, the first monastery founded in the city; Santa Cruz La Real, founded by Santo Domingo and rebuilt by the Catholic Monarchs, preserving the cave where Santa Teresa went into ecstasy and the last place she always visited before leaving Segovia; Santa María del Parral, the last house of the Hieronymite Order in Spain and linked to Enrique IV and his favourite, Juan Pacheco the Marquis of Villena.

Among all of them and as an exception, the Royal Mint, from the time of Philip II and one of the most important examples of industrial architecture that are preserved in our country.

The religious feeling is still alive, and we can find the church of the Veracruz, Romanesque and with a dodecagonal plant; the convent of the Carmelites with the tomb of San Juan de la Cruz and the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Fuencisla, holly protector of the city.
