4. Along the Arches

Atractions: azoguejo, Puente Segoviana, Día Sanz, Antonio Machado, convent San Francisco, Romanesque paintings in the church of San Justo, San Antonio El Real, Mudejar coffered ceilings, Enrique IV.

In this route we will discover another Segovia, probably more unknown by our visitors, but with authentic jewels along the route.

Starting from the Azoguejo square, the aqueduct will lead us to the square of DíaSanz, brave lord founder of the old League of Segovian noble lineage. In this square, the mark of Antonio Machadoremains latent in thecollege Mariano Quintanilla, where he was a teacher during his stay in the city. Nearby is the former convent of San Francisco, nowadays the headquarters of the Artillery Academy, and the birthplace of San Alfonso Rodríguez, an example of popular architecture and former House of draper’s institution.

A very different Romanesque style will be found in the church of San Justo, whose paintings are impressive because of their great quality and state of conservation. From Plaza del Salvador, we will continue towards the origin of our Aqueduct and visiting one of the sand traps pools that purifiedthe water at its entrance to the city.

The route ends at the monastery of San Antonio El Real, the old hunting lodge of Henry IV, which has the best Mudejar coffered ceilings in Segovia, perfectly preserved thanks to the community of Poor Clares who live there.
