8. Machado Route in Segovia

ThepoetAntonio Machadocame to Segovia onNovember 1919 to take up thechair of French in theonly High School of thecity, “Instituto General y Técnico”, currentlyknown as Mariano Quintanilla High School. After living in Soria where he methisyoungwife, Leonor, whodiedthreeyearsafterthewedding, and after a briefstay in Baeza, Antonio Machado chose Segovia to be closet o Madrid and hisfamily. Thecityexpected to besungbythepoet as Soria was, butitwasneverlikethat. However, in Segovia, he managed to develophismostintellectual and learnedside, becomingone of thefounders of People’sUniversity, seed of thepresentSan Quirce Royal Academy of History and Art.

            He moved to Segovia where he livedfortwelveyearsand he gavehisfirstspeechonRussianliterature at theDiamondTipHouse, he methisplatoniclove, Giomar, at the no-longer-existingComercio Hotel and he walkeddownRoyal Streetwithhisgoodfriend and colleagueBlas Zambrano,thefather of thephilosopher María Zambrano. In 1931 he presidedover a republican rally at theJuan Bravo Theater. TwomonthslatertheRepublicwasproclaimed and he celebrateditsarrivalbyraisingthe republican flagonthebalcony of theCity Hall. Duringhisstay in Segovia, he resided in a modestpension runby María Luisa Torrego, turnedtodayintoAntonio Machado House-Museum.
